Bathroom floors are slippery when they get wet and make for a hazardous place for an already unstable person. The use of a rubber bathtub mat or non-slip rug is a must. A rubber mat on the shower floor is a must also. Safety bars in the shower and on the bathroom wall are great for support so the elderly don’t use the towel bars, sink tops or other objects to help support balance. Toilets heights that are difficult to get up from easily are another problem. Installing safety features such as toilet safety bars in the bathroom is a great way to reducing the risk of falling. This frame is used on the toilet to give the person hand rails to help raise them up off of the toilet. Another must have item is a shower chair. Elders may not have the strength to stand for long periods and a shower chair lets them sit instead of using their tired legs. Installing a bar in the shower so they can hold onto something to steady them is also useful. Assistive Devices has a great selection of very useful bathroom safety products. They are available for questions by calling 800-856-0889.

]]>We’ve all heard the term but what does it really mean? The Activities of Daily Living (or ADLs) are the
things we do every day: getting out of bed, going to the bathroom, taking a shower, brushing our teeth,
dressing, eating, interacting with others, talking on the phone, getting in and out of a chair, taking
medication, driving, and the list goes on.
When we’re young, and healthy we don’t give these activities a second thought. It’s only when we
can no longer do some or all these things that we get concerned. When this happens; life changes for
everyone. We are concerned with our quality of life, our independence, our future. Our spouse usually
assumes the role of the caregiver with all the additional responsibilities and worries that entails. Our
family members start talking about assisted living or even nursing homes for us. All these things come
into play when the ability to perform the activities of daily living is impaired.
The first thing is to have a professional evaluate your loved one. The situation might not be
as dire as you think. Assess both the inside and outside of the home to insure the individual is in a safe
environment. If the home is no longer safe for your loved one then make the necessary modifications.
If an outside caregiver is needed, ask around as to the best home health agency in the area. Interview
them and ask for references. Do your due diligence, remember you will be entrusting your loved one
to this agency and the people that work for them. Personally meet and talk with the caregiver who will
be caring for your loved one. If you don’t feel comfortable with the individual the agency selected ask
to interview others. Go with your gut feeling. If a family member is the caregiver, periodically check
to see that the caregiver isn’t overwhelmed. Other family members need to pitch in so that the family
caregiver has time off. Respite care for the caregiver is essential.

]]>A shower chair sits in the tub or shower stall and is used to provide assistance and support for the bather. While there are different types of shower chairs, most have height adjustments and non-slip grips on the bottom of each of the legs. If the bather needs assistance sitting on and/or getting up from a shower chair then a chair with arms would be appropriate.
To help getting into the tub the bather can use a tub rail. The tub rail attaches to the side of the tub and thebather can hold on to the top of the rail for stability while making the transfer from the outside to inside the tub. If the bather is unable to step over the side of the tub or is unsteady on his feet then a transfer bench is in order.
A transfer bench is longer than a shower chair and when in use two legs of the bench are in the tub and the other two outside the tub. The bather sits on the portion of the bench that is outside the tub and scoots or slides over the side of the tub. When not in use the bench can be stored inside the tub. To ensure that water doesn’t run on to the floor, the shower curtain should be draped over the portion of the bench that is inside the tub. It is also a good idea to install non-slip decals or rubber bathmats on the floor of the tub to prevent slipping.
Grab bars are essential for added safety when bathing. There are two types of grab bars. The most popular one attaches to the tub or shower wall. It is recommended that a professional install this type of grab bar to ensure that it is anchored securely to the wall. If the bather needs help stabilizing himself when entering and exiting the tub then consider a suction mounted bar. Suction grab bars have a rubber suction cup on both ends and actually stick to the wall. They should be checked periodically to ensure the suction is holding.
A shower wand with a long hose and a cutoff on the shower head handle will make taking a bath a lot easier for the bather as well as the caregiver. Prior to using a shower wand it is best to regulate the flow and temperature of the water that passes through the shower wand. Press the on/off button to stop and start the flow of water then get in the tub. Press the on/off button again to restart the flow of water. When finished showering press the button again to stop the flow of water. After exiting the tub turn off the water at the faucet then press the button on the wand to bleed the water from the hose.
